APTA MA appointed a Task Force in Spring of 2023 to review the current chapter bylaws to make recommendations for a bylaws revision.  This action was based on the need to make changes to comply with the APTA national bylaws, which were revised in 2021.   The review process also provided an opportunity to assess what is working well within the chapter, and what might be improved.

Bylaws are the rules adopted by an organization mainly for the operation and governance of its members and the regulation of its affairs. They describe the organization’s structure and how it is governed and delineate member rights and how members may exercise those rights within the structure (apta.org).  The APTA MA representative assembly has the authority to amend APTA MA’s bylaws

The Task Force’s work has been guided by these basics:

  • The Bylaws must be consistent with applicable law
  • The Bylaws must be consistent with APTA bylaws.
  • The priorities for the revision are meeting member needs, focusing on best practice in governance principles, and focusing on simplicity and clarity
  • The revision will be developed with member input

The timeline of the Task Force work began in May 2023 with information gathering and development of options for member review.  Information was presented and member feedback was collected at Spring 2023, Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Assembly meetings, at the Fall 2023 Annual Conference, at Combined District Meetings, and via an all-member survey.   With this data, the Task Force developed an initial draft bylaws proposal. This draft is under review by APTA and legal council during the summer of 2024, and will be finalized by the Task Force with an expected Assembly vote in November 2024.

The Task Force members are Jane Baldwin, Eric Folmar, Aimee Perron, Lisa Stejskal, and Kathy Mairella (chair).
